Training for 2008 Gut Check

Anyone have any tips on good training for the '08 Gut Check? I have a few things I know that I need to do but any sort of "plan" that I could follow would certainly help.

I concur with Snakebite and the immortal words of Eddy Merckx: "Ride Lots".

This year I tried to be steady. Riding at least some daily, averaging 25 or so miles a day (counting days off) and 5 or more centuries before hand. If your legs are a bit sore, get out anyway, but take it easier. Listen to your body, but push your body as well.

I also ran my 30-50 mile solo rides pretty hard. It made the "slower" pace of the gut check seem easier.

Try riding a brevet series. NE, IA, MN and western SD all offer them.

Do you have any information about firm dates for the Hwy212GC_412..? I lived in Rapid City and Piedmont many years ago.. I may be interested in returning for a nice little ride this summer..

Even though I only rode the last half of the 2007 Gut Check in the 2 person relay I found that a weekly 80-100 mile ride in June and July really helped. I ride with a group of competitive riders and these rides are typically 20+mph. This really helps to raise your aerobic threshold in that you can tolerate harder efforts and still remain aerobic. Riding with others helps to tolerate the longer rides at a faster pace. Plus this is a great chance to find out what foods and fluids work the best for you. My HR monitor is also my best friend. It honestly tells me how much effort I'm putting out. I new during the Gut Check that if I kept my HR below 135 I could stay totally aerobic which meant I was using primarily slow twitch muscle fiber that uses fat as their primary energy source. As long as I kept plenty of carbohydrates and fluid coming in I could ride for a very long time. I plan to do the same for the solo 2008 Gut Check.
